Bachelder (Jay A.) family papers, Nome, Alaska, 1882-1969.

Papers are primarily personal correspondence and reminiscences of Dell Reilly Bachelder, Jay Bachelder's wife. Correspondents include Alaska representative and senator, Charles D. Jones, who was one of three who cast Alaska's first electoral ballots for U.S. president in Dec. 1960, and Carl J. Lomen. Also included are the correspondence of Jay Bachelder and his daughter, Marian Bachelder Williams, newspaper clippings, and family legal documents including Alaskan stock certificates. Miscellaneous items include an Eskimo catechism from the Seward Peninsula and a 1946 map of Nome showing building lots.

Jay A. Bachelder was cashier and assistant manager for the Nome Bank & Trust Co. from 1907-1910. He returned to Brainerd, Minn. and then went back to Nome in 1911 where he was cashier for Miners & Merchants Bank and assistant secretary of the Blue Goose Mining Co. Leonhard Seppala (1878-1967) was born in Norway and came to Alaska when a young man. He was a sled dog racer and freighter. Charles D. Jones moved to Nome from Chicago in 1900. He became a longshoreman, a miner and prospector and a foreman with the Alaska Road Commission. He served in the Territorial House of Representatives (1913-1915), in the Territorial Senate (1953-1957), and in the State House of Representatives (1959-1961).
